Grandparents as Parents - the challenges faced and how Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise has been able to help .......
Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise supports a range of local community organisations in a number of ways, but one of the most rewarding in recent times is the club’s support of the local Grandparents as Parents group (GAPS).

GAPS is a support group run by a number of volunteers who meet with the grandparents on a regular basis to provide support and help across a range of issues that face them on a daily basis.   Not only the daily care of bringing up young children but also how to handle financial and legal issues, at a time when they are often living on government benefits and pensions.

A guest speaker from the GAPS group spoke at a recent meeting, touching the heartstrings of members and sparking a need to respond.  This resulted in an immediate financial donation to the group’s annual weekend away, but also generated a more pro-active approach, made more challenging due to COVID restrictions.

The club was fortunate to receive very generous donations from local community members that resulted in:

  • A large amount of wool that members have transformed into jumpers, beanies, scarves, cuddly toys, baby clothing, etc.
  • Furniture
  • Bedding
  • Children’s toys
  • Books

The club is also organising Backpacks for all GAPS children for the start of the 2022 school year.  These backpacks will be filled with stationery items, lunchboxes, drink bottles, etc – to ensure that they start the school year on an equal footing with other children.   Thanks go to the local Officeworks that has generously donated a number of stationery items.

Club members are providing a BBQ at the group’s Christmas gathering at Maitland Park – a great way to mark the end of a very challenging year, but one that has seen the club make a significant contribution to helping this very worthwhile and deserving group.
